*** Title: Distributed probabilistic resource management in virtualized networks and cloud computing

 *** Supervisors
  • Patrick Loiseau (EURECOM, academic supervisor)
  • Sebastien Soudan (Lyatiss, industrial supervisor)

*** Background and objective of the PhD work

Modern computer and networks infrastructures such as virtualized networks and clouds are increasingly large, dynamic and variable. For example, there is an inherent uncertainty in the actual CPU cycles that are allocated to a virtual machine in cloud computing or in the actual rate of a virtual network link. This uncertainty is both due to infrastructure size and complexity and the difficulty to predict how the other users will behave. In this context, due to the partial knowledge of the system state, it is hard to offer strict quality guarantees to users. Probabilistic objectives are more appropriate in large-scale systems, both to cope with uncertainty and to leverage the constraint relaxation in order to improve the system efficiency.

The objective of the PhD will be to propose distributed algorithms for resource allocation that optimize probabilistic objectives at the high-level user demand; and to establish theoretically the algorithms’ performance using stochastic models. Starting from simple scenarios based on realistic application needs, a number of more complex aspects will be investigated: the effect of the network structure, the effect of resource bundles (combinatorial), pricing schemes adapted to probabilistic quality and the effect of provider competition, etc.

 *** Candidate profile

 - The candidate must hold a Master degree (or equivalent) at the time of hire, in computer science, applied mathematics, electrical engineering or a related field.
 - The successful candidate must have a strong mathematical background on probability, stochastic processes and/or optimization.
 - Knowledge in one or several of the following areas would be a plus: game theory, network economics, graphs, advanced probability (large system asymptotic), networking (virtual networks, cloud computing).

 *** Practical information

 - The position will be based at Lyatiss (Lyon, France), with frequent visits to EURECOM (Sophia-Antipolis, France). The successful candidate will be hired by Lyatiss and registered as a EURECOM PhD student. Upon completion of the requirement, the PhD degree will be awarded by EURECOM.

  • The working language is English (knowledge of French is not required).
  • Starting date: Fall 2012 -- Duration: 3 years
  • Competitive salary and benefits packages (including medical insurance) are offered for the duration of the PhD.

 *** Application procedure

To apply or to obtain any further information, please contact directly Prof. Patrick Loiseau (patrick.loiseau@eurecom.fr) and Dr. Sebastien Soudan (sebastien@lyatiss.com). Your application email should include:
  • A short motivation statement explaining why you would like to do a PhD and you relevant past experience (e.g., projects or internships on related topics).
  • A detailed CV including a list of courses followed together with the grades obtained.
  • The name of two persons (preferably professors or researchers with whom you have interacted) who are willing to provide a recommendation letter for your application.

The position is open until filled. To ensure full consideration of their application, interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as
 possible.
